Daughter of Ex- South African Leader Jacob Zuma Rejects Terror Accusations as Court Case Begins
The child of ex- South African President Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related allegations at the start of her legal proceedings in the port city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being charged over comments she published on social media in the past during deadly unrest in South Africa that followed the apprehension of her parent.
A period of disorder in various areas of the country in July 2021, including looting and intentional burning, caused at least 300 dead and led to damage worth an estimated $2.8 billion (2.2 billion pounds).
Zuma-Sambudla has been charged of encouraging this unrest and faces accusations of provocation to commit terrorism and public disorder.
Context of the Proceedings
The unrest were focused in the areas of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal province and were triggered by the former president's detention for defying a court order to appear as a witness at an probe into allegations of corruption while he was serving as president.
Ms Zuma-Sambudla has consistently denied the charges against her, with her legal representative in the past describing the government's evidence as weak.
She has also repeatedly said the charges against her were an attempt to resolve political grievances with her parent after he established his own party and ran against the African National Congress.
Backing and Court Representation
This was supported by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which claimed the proceedings was an "power abuse" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and familial targeting" against the previous head of state and his kin.
A few of followers from her party, the political party, gathered outside the judicial building, while her dad and other party leaders were present at the hearings inside.
The defense has argued that the testimony presented by the state is insufficient and fails to provide substantial grounds for a criminal finding.
