The Former French President Preparing to Release Jail Diary Chronicling Three Weeks Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a personal account in the coming weeks titled Notes from a Cell, detailing his time endured in jail.

The announcement came just 11 days following the ex-leader was released as his appeal proceeds the court ruling on charges of illegal collaboration in a case to obtain presidential race money linked to the regime of the late Libyan dictator.

Time in Custody: Solitary Musings

“Behind bars there is nothing to see, and nothing to do,” he writes in one passage, indicating the memoir is more about his thoughts from seclusion instead of wider commentary regarding the packed and struggling correctional facilities in the country.

“I forget silence, not present in La Santé, where one hears a lot to hear,” he continues. “The din unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, one’s inner world grows stronger while incarcerated.”

Court Appearance: Describing the Ordeal

During his plea for freedom, Sarkozy was present remotely from a room in prison, characterizing his incarceration as gruelling. He stated to the judge: “I want to pay tribute the correctional officers, who are exceptionally humane, and who helped make this difficult experience tolerable – as it truly is one.”

“It never crossed my mind that at 70 years of age, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s an ordeal I must endure. I confess it’s hard, it’s very hard. It affects one all who experience it as it’s exhausting.”

First of Its Kind

He, who led the nation between 2007 and 2012, was the first former head from the EU and the initial post-WWII figure in the French Republic to serve time in prison.

Ahead of his incarceration he mentioned he would use his time to compose an account.

Books in Prison

Unconfirmed is did he manage to go through the volumes he had in his cell: a life story of Jesus spanning two books together with Dumas’s work the classic tale, in which a wrongfully accused individual is imprisoned but escapes to exact retribution.

Daily Reality

He was placed in solitary confinement due to safety concerns in a room roughly 100 square feet featuring a personal bathroom at La Santé prison located in the capital. Security personnel occupied a neighbouring cell.

Reports indicated his diet consisted solely dairy snacks during his stay because he feared prison cuisine might have been spat on. Although he had access to cook for himself but refused this, based on unnamed sources. Unclear remains if he will detail what he ate in prison.

Defense Viewpoint

His attorney, Christophe Ingrain each day while he was in prison, told the release hearing his safety would improve released compared to inside. “There were death threats, heard shouts at night and emergency responses in an adjacent room during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Case Background

Sarkozy went to prison last month when the judiciary imposed a half-decade term for criminal conspiracy over a scheme to secure campaign funds for his 2007 presidential race.

He disputes the charges and has appealed against the verdict, with a new trial set for early next year.
