The Merseyside thrower Weathers Major Test while The Indian pioneer Creates A Landmark for India.

The 2024 semi-finalist narrowly avoided an early exit to advance into the second round of the prestigious tournament on the opening weekend.

The Merseysider, who was a beaten semi-finalist last year, was forced all the way to a deciding tie-breaker by Poland’s Sebastian Bialecki before finally clinching a hard-fought victory at Alexandra Palace.

A Turbulent Match

Bunting made a flying start, averaging an incredible 119.4 to power through the opening set. Victory seemed assured after checking out a spectacular 160 finish to take the second set.

However, ‘The Bullet’ cooled off, and he won just one leg over the next two sets. This let Bialecki – who remained oblivious even when a wasp settled on his shoulder – to square the match. Bunting regained his composure in the final set, but was still taken to the wire before winning it 4-2.

“When you are playing at Alexandra Palace you experience all the feelings,” Bunting stated on Sky Sports. “I was aware Sebastian was going to be difficult and even at 2-0 he kept fighting. I am fortunate to get away with that one.”

Kumar Makes Landmark Victory

Bunting's next opponent will be 'The Royal Bengal', who achieved a first by becoming the initial victor from India at the tournament. He defeated the Netherlands' Richard Veenstra 3-2 in a thrilling match.

The 40-year-old, who had lost in all four of his prior first-round appearances, suggested this breakthrough could have “paved the way to a billion” darts players from India.

“I’m lost for words right now. I’m emotional, I’m delighted,” Kumar expressed. “If you dream it, anything is possible. I’ve dreamed of this ever since I saw Dennis Priestley win the World Championship.”

He joked with a humorous warning: “I’m sorry, a decade from now if you have multiple players in the world championship entering to Indian film songs, don’t blame me.”
